preparedness

Preparedness refers to the state of being prepared for specific or unpredictable events or situations. Preparedness is an important quality in achieving goals and in avoiding and mitigating negative outcomes.

This my friends is the key to it all.  If you want to live a healthy lifestyle, make healthy choices, and take control of your eating the only route there is is ”preparedness”…no way around it.

We spent a good portion of our day today in our jammies, watching football.  So around 3 we made a run to the park.  It gets dark and cold here early and when we piled in the car to head home my Husband noted it was already 5…and suggested we eat out.  I was all for it as I had planned nothing for dinner.  As we tossed possible dining destinations back and forth it occurred to me how silly it was when I have a freezer, pantry and fridge overflowing with easy, healthy choices.

Preparedness.

Dinner was 4 things:  frozen fish, quinoa, bruschetta sauce, and edamame

1st I microwaved the edamame and in 5 minutes the kids were eating a hot veggie.  Costco sells Madame Edamame and the little bags go right into the microwave.  Fast.  Hot.  Healthy.   Sprinkled with a little garlic salt and everyone is a fan. (these are also good cold in a bag on the run)

2. Fish.  I know, not everyone likes fish.  But I would encourage you to find one you can tolerate as it is an awesome lean protein, and easy to make.  If you choose non-fishy ones they are basically plain, like chicken, and will taste like whatever you put on them.  We eat a lot of Tilapia, which Costco also sells frozen, and we also enjoy Barramundi which has no fishiness at all!  Remember to check the Monterey Aquarium Seafood Watch site for best choices!  I put frozen fish in cold water (still in the packaging) for about 5 min, then it is ready to go.  Most of these frozen white fish choices are good broiled on each side for 5 min.  I added a little pepper and some Galeos Miso for flavor.

3.  Quinoa.  6 minutes in the microwave.  The main reason I like to make quinoa is it is fast and light.  You don’t feel all weighed down like you do after eating rice.  Trader Joe’s Organic Quinoa is cheap, and can you beat a 4- 6 minute microwave option?

4.  Bruschetta.  I always have bruschetta sauce in the house.  It is easy to dip things into, and dump onto dishes to spice them up!  Actually right now I have the Costco option (Hannah’s) and the Trader Joe’s kind. Tonight I added it to the quinoa and it was so YUMMY!  I actually just made more to have for lunch tomorrow.  Quinoa has a lot of protein so it makes a perfect mini-meal on the run, and tastes great cold!

So 30 minutes after walking into the house we had a dinner that was pretty healthy, easy to make, and relatively cheap…all things I am sure we would not have accomplished if we had gone out. Not one thing I made took over 6 minutes…hard to argue with that!

Preparedness=Good Stuff!

Fast Food Assist – Taco Bell

I ran to the border for MANY years.  After reading their menu for this post I felt sick.  Actually I wrote this post a few weeks ago.  Then I was so overwhelmed by disgust as I thought back to those late night runs to the Border and all the food we consumed (where else can you feed 15 ppl for $20 at 2am) that I had to BLOCK it from my brain!

Now I am back.  Life happens, and it is moving forward that counts.  It is also learning how to eat the right food anytime, and anywhere, even Taco Bell!  Though there are many places I would stop before the Border, it is still good to have all the facts! So here it is!

Taco Bell makes it easy to narrow down the “better” choices with their “Drive-Thru Diet Menu”.  They have actually put an end to this ABSURD campaign, but they have left the menu items in place.

The first three items under the Drive-Thru Diet Menu I eliminated right away.  All 1300 mg sodium (or more) and that is just too much salt to consume in one menu item, as it is close to your daily allowance.  The items I would eat (if I had to) or feed my kids would be the following:

Fresco Grilled Steak Taco 160 calories/4.5g fat/600mg sodium/2g fiber/9g protein

Fresco Crunchy Taco 150 calories/7g fat/350mg sodium/3g fiber/7g protein

Fresco Ranchero Chicken Soft Taco 170 calories/4g fat/740mg sodium/2g fiber/12g protein

Fresco Soft Taco  180 calories/7g fat/640mg sodium/3g fiber/8g protein

It is a lot of sodium though, I mean a lot.  Kids really shouldn’t have more than about 1500 mg per day, and even that changes depending on who you are asking.

The Mild sauce?  Go for it, zero everything but sodium and that is 35mg per packet.  So what if it can bring a penny back to full luster?  Jeesh!

Fast Food Assist – Starbucks

So I would love to tell you all I have parted ways with Fast Food Options and I never ever eat them, but that just is not the case. I will say I have not been through the Mcy D’s Drive-thru in 5 months, and that is pretty cool. I never really loved eating that food, but now that I know more about it I can’t bring myself to serve it to my kids, so I don’t. They still eat it, but usually on someone else’s time and dime!

I think about how often I did hit up the Mcy D’s and cringe. Granted it is 2 blocks from my house and on most days I pass it about 16 times, but still, it was a staple and that makes me sad.

C’est la vie. That was then, this is now. So fast food? FOR SURE! It is impossible to exist in the 21st Century and not find times that you just have to hit something fast and now.

So my entries on the subject are going to be titled “Fast Food Assist” and I will tell you what I partake in when I gotta have it fast, and now! Again, the idea here is when you need to eat, are unprepared, and don’t want to sink your whole day by making a bad BAD choice! Keep your energy up by looking for options that have fiber, protein, no saturated fat, and the same range of calories as you would prepare if on your own!

STARBUCKS

Huge PROPS to Starbucks for giving us so many decent choices, protein, carbs, vitamins…LOTS of good, quick, fast options here when on the run! They have also removed the high fructose corn syrup, artificial trans fats, flavors and dyes from all of their menu options! NICE! (Remember this is on OCCASION not everyday!!! It is ALWAYS better to take your healthy options with you, prepared at home, by YOU!)
